William Patten Primary School

On Friday 3rd March, ten pupils from William Patten were invited to attend Olive School’s debating event celebrating their Active Citizenship day. Together with a range of other local schools, the children took part in a debate on the motion ‘This house believes that school holidays are too long and should be shortened.’ The speaker of Hackney Council was there to chair the debate and the room was organised like the House of Commons chamber, complete with dispatch boxes and microphones! In addition, an outreach worker from the Houses of Parliament Education team led a workshop for all present on the importance of democracy and the functions of parliament. Despite some fantastic arguments from the for side and a very well delivered speech by Octavia (6B) in support of the proposition, the vote was decisively against the motion.
