Domestic Abuse – Information and Support for Families

You are not alone. Help is available.

At William Patten, we understand that domestic abuse can affect children and families in many different ways. We are committed to creating a safe, supportive environment where every child feels protected, valued and listened to.

If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic abuse, please remember that you are not alone, and it is not your fault. Support is available.

What is domestic abuse?

Domestic abuse is behaviour used to hurt, frighten, control or intimidate another person within a family or intimate relationship. It can include physical violence, emotional abuse, controlling behaviour, financial abuse, sexual abuse and online harassment. Domestic abuse can happen in any household, regardless of background or circumstances. It is not always visible, and it does not have to involve physical violence.

How can domestic abuse affect children?

Children do not need to be physically hurt to be affected by domestic abuse. Hearing or witnessing abuse at home can affect their emotional wellbeing, behaviour, confidence and learning.

Children may become anxious, withdrawn, unsettled or angry, or experience difficulties with sleep and concentration. Every child responds differently.

How can the school help?

If you are experiencing domestic abuse or are worried about a child, please speak to our Designated Safeguarding Lead, Sian Davies, or another trusted member of school staff. Our safeguarding team can listen without judgement, help families access appropriate support and take steps to protect children’s safety and wellbeing. Concerns will be handled sensitively.

Where a child may be at risk of harm, relevant information may need to be shared with safeguarding professionals.

Keeping Safe Online

If someone monitors your phone or internet activity, consider using a trusted person’s device to access support. Only save information or make contact if it is safe to do so.

Our Commitment

At William Patten the safety and wellbeing of our children and families are central to everything we do. We want every family to know that help is available and that seeking support is a positive step.

If you are worried about a child, please contact the DSL, Sian Davies sdavies@williampatten.hackney.sch.uk or call the office 0207 254 4014 and ask to speak to Sian.

If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 999.
